Looking forward to enjoying Victoria’s beautiful waterways with your family this summer?
While we are all excited for the warmer months, now is a timely reminder of the importance to be safe around the water.
Last season, Victoria recorded its worst fatal drowning toll, with 61 people’s lives cut short in Victorian waters. It is more important than ever that we brush up on our skills and ensure we are aware of the risks around water.
We’ve got some simple tips to help you stay safe around water this summer:
#1 – ACTIVELY SUPERVISE CHILDREN AROUND WATER
Did you know that it only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown in as little as a few centimetres of water. Keep your family safe this summer and ensure your time in the water is full of fun and laughter.
Keep children under 5 within arm’s reach
Parents should be within arms reach at all times. It only takes a few seconds for your child to get into trouble.
Keep under 10s in eyesight
Parents should position themselves to have a clear view of the child. It is important to constantly and actively supervise your child at all times.
#2- ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED AND YELLOW FLAGS
If we can’t see you, we can’t save you. The red and yellow flags are placed at patrolled beaches for your safety. It is also a good idea to check the weather at beachsafe.org before heading out. This is also a great way to explore the various patrolled locations near you!
#3 – ALWAYS SWIM WITH A FRIEND
Swimming alone significantly increases the possibility of fatal drowning. This is the same for boating, surfing and any other recreational activities in or around the water. So remember to take a friend when heading out into the water!
